Because the card game known as Blackjack is strictly a game of odds, there is not a great deal that can be done in developing strategies or tactics for winning. There are standard “responses” to hands that have delivered proven results for players however, and most of these have developed out of analysis of the odds and experiences from the many millions of games played.

For example, standard strategy has been developed by using a player’s total hand value and the dealer’s one visible card. Generally, Blackjack players believe that if a dealer is not showing a ten value card, he or she probably has one “in the hole”, meaning facedown, or is going to receive one on their “hit”. They also generally believe this about their own hands as well. Many strategies for beating the “house” have developed from this basic belief.

Most players operate on the simplest of strategies built around the “ten” cards, and will usually:

• Always “hit” on a hand of eleven or less, since a “bust” is impossible in this situation.
• Generally “stand” when hands are seventeen or higher, and when the dealer is not showing a seven or higher. At such times, the player’s hand is too high and the risk of “busting” too great.
• “Stand” on hands that are from twelve to sixteen, with a dealer showing a four through a six card. While this may generally be viewed as a “weak” hand, the dealer’s hand is likely to bust as they try to get closer to twenty-one than the player. An exception to this rule is if a player has a twelve and the dealer is showing a two or three because the dealer will not bust if their second card is the predicted ten, and they will then tie (“push”) the player or beat them with a thirteen.

There are players however who operate along different lines, and one alternative strategy involves the analysis of the “composition” of the player’s hand. For instance, standard strategy indicates that players with a twelve who are facing a dealer with an up card of four should “stand”, but if that player’s twelve comes from a ten and a two, the “compositional” player would take a hit. This is because they are all ready holding their ten card, and basic theory says that they are not likely to receive another ten card in that game.

Compositional play can be greatly affected by the number of decks in play however, and modern casinos frequently employ “shoes” which are capable of containing up to eight decks. As the number of decks is increased the house edge, or likelihood of the player being defeated, increases as well.
