These days casinos are run by giant corporations who we assume don’t have the same methods of punishment at their disposal. What they do at their disposal is the most up to date technology and highly trained staff deployed around the casino to detect anyone who is attempting to count cards. It remains a very grey area as to whether counting cards is illegal. It is certainly unethical, and it is for sure that the casinos don’t like it, simply because it considerably upsets their profit margins.

Counting cards in a real casino is difficult to say the least. It would take someone with a combination of the most fantastic memory and a very high IQ to succeed in counting the cards in play at a blackjack table with six packs in play. If there are such people about, and there may well be a few, then the casino can do very little about it, and they may even have a fleeting admiration for such an individual. It is when people work in cahoots to attempt to cheat the casino through card counting that the casino management gets a little hot under the collar. And even more so when they begin to use mechanical means to do so.

A casino’s ideal profile of a player is one who comes to have some fun and doesn’t mind dropping $20 on a few hands of blackjack. They really love these types of people, as they are the ones who pay for the crystal chandeliers, the fountains and the wall to wall carpets. Casinos don’t like players who come to win, and to pit their wits against the house to make a profit. To a professional gambler who has chosen playing blackjack against the house as their means to earn their living there is no fun involved in playing the game. For them playing the game represents an intellectual challenge, where the constantly have to calculate the odds and adjust them in their favor to come out ahead. And the only way that they can do so is to keep track of the cards coming out of the dealer’s shoe. They need to use this information and the years of experience that they have acquired to take every hand dealt and try to make it into a profit earner, or at least to break even on it.

Overall a professional blackjack player will be looking for a profit of no more than two to four percent on a session of play. They never expect to win every hand, and never panic when they lose one. They need to remain totally focused and consistent on their target. They need to learn to keep a low profile with their goal being to make their run last as long as possible.
The reason is that they have long since learned that, unfair though it may seem, a player who wins consistently at blackjack will eventually find themselves barred from the Casino. Not because they are ostensibly cheating, just because Casinos don’t like winners.
