Any discussion about “hitting” or “standing” in Blackjack must address hand values. The point of the game is to hit twenty-one or to come closer than the dealer to that mark. How does a player do this? While there are many different kinds of strategies and theories, the best approach is to consider the “odds” of the game.

In Blackjack standard decks of cards are used to determine the outcome, and in any deck of cards are those valued numerically from two to ten, and then the face cards of the King, Queen and Jack which receive a value of ten, and the Ace which can be valued at one or eleven.

Using these values makes it clear that there are more ten cards than any other; sixteen in fact. Expert players base most of their strategy on the predominance of the ten cards.

A game begins with players and the dealer receiving their cards, usually only one of the dealer’s cards is shown, and the other (the “hole” card) remains a mystery until the last player makes their choices. Most players operate on the premise that if a dealer is not showing a ten card, then they will probably have a ten in the “hole”. They then make their choices and moves based on this theory.

Statistically if the dealer is showing a two through a six it is quite likely they will “bust” because they will have to hit on a twelve through a sixteen in order to beat the other players. What this means for the players is that conservative action is probably going to deliver a win.

When the dealer is showing a seven through ten, a face card, or an Ace however, it is considered a good hand for the “house” and a player will need to be aggressive in order to win. Why? Basically if the “odds” of the dealer’s second card being a “ten” apply, then he or she is likely to have a hand value of eighteen, nineteen, twenty or twenty-one.

With either the above scenarios in mind, any player must then use a reliable strategy, and the most popular are:

• Always “hit” on a hand of eleven or less.
• For hands that are seventeen or higher, and where a dealer is not showing a seven or higher the player should always “stand”.
• Hands that are from twelve to sixteen, with a dealer showing a four through a six card, should always stand, with the only exception to this rule being a player who has a twelve and the dealer is showing a two or three.
• Finally, if a player has a twelve to sixteen, and a dealer is showing a seven or higher, the player should always hit.
