Traditional blackjack strategy has some fairly strict guidelines about when a player should take cards, or “hit”, or refuse to take cards, or “stand”. Most of these rules are built around the rule of the ten cards, meaning that most decisions are based on the presence of ten in the dealer’s hand, or the presence of a ten in the player’s.

For example, common strategy indicates that on hands which are from twelve to sixteen in value, with a dealer showing a four through a six card, the player should always stand. Though this may be a weaker hand for the player, a dealer with a four to six will have to hit twice to beat the sixteen, meaning that they are likely to bust and the conservative player will then win the game.

One less common strategy is the “never bust” method of play, which dictates that a player holding a hand valued from twelve to sixteen should never hit, while a hand valued at eleven or less must take a hit. By following this strategy the player will never be able to “bust”.

Unfortunately, though this method is protecting the player from busting, it is also dramatically increasing the casino’s odds of winning. Experts have determined that a player who holds at twelve to sixteen actually increases the casino’s edge by nearly five percent.

Utilizing the “never bust” method may also open up a player to the wrath of their fellow players, especially if they are seated in the “Third Baseman” position at the table. This means that they are the last to receive their cards, and their decisions will have an impact on the other players, whose strategies can be affected by an untraditional strategy such as the “never bust” tactic.
