In a high card hand, the card that the player’s success is tied to is the highest card in his hand. If one player has a ten high and the other has a nine high, the ten wins. Four of a kind is a hand where there are four cards of the same value, and a straight flush is five consecutive cards that are all also the same suit. Probably the most popular variety of poker that uses these rankings is known as Texas Hold’em. After players bet on their hole cards, the dealer “burns a card,” or removes the top card from the deck, and then flips the next three cards face-up onto the table. This is called the flop, and it is the next opportunity for players to bet. All players share the three cards in the flop, so the hole cards are extremely important. After the players finish betting on the flop, the dealer burns another card and then flips a fourth card onto the table, which is called the turn card. Players bet, the dealer burns another card, and then flips a fifth card out known as the river card. Players then bet for a final time and then show hands.

Between the two hole cards and the five community cards, each player has seven cards from which to select the best hand of five. Players announce what hands they are playing with, and then the bets are paid accordingly.
