Blackjack “strategy” comes in many forms and varieties. There are times that some people always “double down”, while others don’t. There are hands that require a consideration about “splitting”, and then there are the many general tactics or strategies to playing the game.

Most traditional strategies operate on the understanding of the function of the “ten” cards in the deck. Standard decks of cards each contain sixteen individual cards with a value of ten, including the King, Queen, Jack and numeric “10” cards. This means that the majority of each deck is made up of tens. When the cards remaining in the dealer’s deck, or “shoe”, are mostly the “high” cards, or the tens and Aces, the deck is usually considered to be “stacked” in the player’s favor.

Why are high cards favorable to the player and not the house? Because the goal of a game of Blackjack is to reach twenty-one without busting, or coming closer to the number than the dealer, the high cards greatly increase the player’s chances of winning. For example, a “natural” Blackjack is comprised of two “high” cards and pays out the biggest odds, meaning that a player who wins with an Ace and a ten card will usually see a three to two return on their bet.

Standard strategy says the following:

• Always “hit” on a hand of eleven or less.
• In hands that are at seventeen or higher, and where a dealer is not showing a seven or higher the player should always “stand”.
• In hands that are from twelve to sixteen, with a dealer showing a four through a six card should always “stand”. Though this is a weak hand, the dealer’s hand is likely to bust and a conservative player can win. The exception to this is if a player has a twelve and the dealer is showing a two or three.

Another strategy however is the “mimic the dealer” strategy which works on the premise that “if the house has an edge it should be a good strategy to copy the tactics and methods of the dealers”. While many players find this a successful method of play, it may not be a great approach because some casinos do not ask their dealers to play traditional strategy, and none of the beneficial tactics such as “doubling down” or “splitting” is available to the dealer either.

Using the mimic method also presents a greater likelihood of a player busting simply because they must aim to get the highest figure possible, and because the dealer will always receive their cards last. When a player is acting along the lines of the dealer, working at any risk to hit twenty-one, they may only “hit” a losing streak.
