Where the card game of Blackjack is concerned, there are many factors that determine whether a player is the receiver of a winning or losing hand, including where they are seated at the table!

In Blackjack there are a few “titles” for the locations of players at the table, and they are terms taken directly from the game of Baseball. The player who receives cards first from the dealer, or who is seated at the dealer’s nearest right-hand position is called the First Baseman, and the player who receives their cards last, or who is seated at the farthest left-hand position from the dealer is known as the Third Baseman.

Basically, the First Baseman is generally not assigned a great deal of responsibility by the other players, but the Third Baseman is usually viewed as having a strong effect on the outcome of the hand. This is because they are the last to act before the dealer receives their own cards, and which means that the Third Baseman’s decisions directly affect all of the other players.

Unfortunately, not all players at a table will be operating along the same strategies, and may not be using any strategy at all. This is the reason that the Third Baseman position can be quite controversial.

For example, there is a method of playing Blackjack which involves something called “card counting” or “counting cards” and which guides a player’s choices based not on traditional Blackjack strategy, but on the player’s knowledge of the ratio of “high” to “low” cards remaining in the deck. A Third Baseman counting cards will usually not make the same choices that a player utilizing standard strategy might make and this will impact all the remaining players at the table, because it may change the distribution of the cards.

Realistically, Blackjack players cannot blame the Third Baseman for making a call which might be different from the others seated at the table, and there are no assigned responsibilities for the person in that seat. Occasionally, there are some conflicts between players when the Third Baseman makes a novice or non-strategic choice, but in reality this is one of the risks of the game, and a dedicated player should enjoy the challenge presented by the Third Baseman’s choices.
